Scrappy Sunday Challenge and Best of the Scrapping Blogosphere

Another Scrappy Sunday challenge to lead off our week of scrapbooking goodies --

It's been a while since I have had the pleasure of hosting! I'm doing a traditional scrap layout today, but it's super easy, and feel free to go digi :)

In my sample, I did a page for my boys' day at the All Star baseball game and homerun derby. I didn't have a lot of strong photos for this event, so I changed the center photo to an embellishment.

A couple of tips and tricks for this layout. I LOVE Cosmo Cricket paper collections. They are good for the color challenged of us out there, that need some help coordinating papers. I'm CHEAP with paper -- I didn't want to use up two pages in order to make this one layout, so I cut the center square out and then flipped the page over and taped it back together! Here's a close up of the back so you can see how I have it taped.

Here we are with another fun scrapbook sketch for you to play with this week!! My sketching MoJo seems to have deserted me so I'm relying once again on a super talented digital template designer to help us out with this week's sketch. I used a digital template from Connie Prince's Gift of Gab (Gotta Pixel) for my sample this week and the template will serve as our sketch. If you're a digi scrapper, you can purchase and download the template (which comes with 3 others) and use it to make your layout. Of course, if you're a paper scrapper - feel free to use the image like you would any other sketch (but please credit Connie in any galleries you post in). The sketch is below. Scrappy Sunday Challenge and Best of the Scrapping Blogosphere

From now on, I'm going to post our Scrapbook round up with a challenge.  Every weekend, Jen Tapler head's up our scrapbooking challenge on Paper Craft Planet.  She gives great tips and does a lot with the limited supplies of living on Maui, so I thought it would be fun to start off the scraplist with Jen's challenge.

We had a random power outage this morning right as I was finishing up the sketch and my sample layout and I lost EVERYTHING and had to start all over. ARRRGH!! Anyway, I have a really fun sketch this week that is wholly inspired by a fantastic digi template from the Bottom Ups: Set 1

Scrappy Sunday and Scrapbook Saturday -- both on almost Monday :P

Sorry for my absence this week.  I went with my mom to St. Augustine for vacation.  I thought we'd have Internet, but it turned out to be a bit unpredictable.  You had to sit in a certain chair and hold your tongue just right... you know the drill.  Anyway, I came home to literally thousands of blogs to read and I'm just now catching up.  I'll post some pictures and creations tomorrow, but in the mean time, here's Scrapbook Saturday :)

4th of July fun

When I turned 40, my dad gave me the Nikon d80 camera.  It was one of those gifts that was "life changing."  As a scrapbooker, I've taken pictures forever, but I could never really capture the moments that I wanted to keep.  Moments like "blowing out the candles on the cake"  were too dark and blurry.  Baseball pictures could only be taken during the afternoon games.  Christmas was a bust. 

My new camera is not user friendly.  I may get some argument on this, but for a couple of months, I walked around taking pictures with the camera set to "auto."  I have been taking online classes and reading manuals on how to really use it. 

Yesterday, I decided that I would pull out my camera's instruction manual and figure out how to take pictures of fireworks.  I was happily surprised with how well all the pictures came out and I wanted to share them with you --


This is me & Rob.  I was the one adult there who got her face painted.  I couldn't resist -- it's immaturity or playfulness.  I can't decide.  I'm very "into" the blurred background right now. 


Bottom of the pile is Eric, my oldest -- middle is Jake and top is my nephew, William. 


My favorite fireworks shot from the night.  I had the camera up on a tripod, so I was pretty happy that the composition turned out so well.

Today is Scrappy Sunday over on Paper Craft Planet.  I don't usually have time to play along, but I dedicated today to scrapbooking and Jen's sketch was perfect for my pictures from yesterday. 


I love how the sketch turned out - I'm sorry the picture is a little off.  It's hard for me to photograph scrapbook pages.  I haven't figured out my best settings for that yet.  I know it's best to shoot scrapbook pages from above, but that doesn't work out for me.  Anyway, I love the layout -- you'll have to check out Jen's digi version.  She's really the "master" :)

Here's a close up shot of the stickers on the title.  One of the tricks I've picked up from reading blogs is that blending sticker fonts is a great way to extend your stash and add interest to your layout.

Scrappy Sunday... except almost a full week late

Jen Tapler happens to be one of the most talented artists that I know.  I'm really lucky to count her among my friends, and even more honored when she said she'd come work with me over on Paper Craft Planet.  Jen is taking over the new weekly scrapbook sketch challenge, and I decided to play along.  It took me a full week to get my project from vision to paper, but I did it, and I love how it turned out.  

Sadly, my colors are a little washed out in the picture -- the weather has been horrible and I couldn't score any natural lighting.  The journaling is hilarious -- typical for my sassy kids:

Me:  "Eric, you're getting too big!  I'm going to have to put a brick on your head to keep you from growing."

Eric:  "Mom, you realize that will just make me short.  I'll still grow older."

He's a wise guy.
